In the future, (drinking) water will become a scarce and precious commodity, so it is not wise to use this treasure for cleaning. A few weeks without rain quickly lead to drought fears in densely populated areas, and are policymakers talking about water cuts? Which taps will be closed soon? What does this mean for a water-intensive industrial and service sector such as the cleaning sector?
Due to climate change and associated longer droughts, densely populated regions are extremely vulnerable to water shortages as they use more water than is available. The forecast for the future is that there will be 30 to 70 percent less rain. Long periods of drought will increasingly occur, especially in summer.
Drinking water is a luxury
We don’t realize that in everything we use water for, we are in fact using scarce and precious drinking water. It makes sense to use clean water for drinking, cooking and showering. But when we use this precious drinking water for other purposes, we may have questions.
Drinking water does not just come out of the tap by itself. Making water drinkable is a complicated, time-consuming and energy-consuming process. In many cases, water purification itself is harmful to the environment. Just using less saves water, but we also need to make sure that the water we use is as contaminated as possible. When we clean with water and chemicals, we make the environment twice as heavy.
